Our Principal Consultant

After graduating from Stanford University, Kia returned home to Washington, DC and began her professional career in public service as a member of the Children’s Defense Fund’s (CDF) Black Student Leadership Network (BSLN) and the Freedom School Program. Under the direction of visionary leaders like Marian Wright Edelman, she learned what it truly means to be a ‘servant leader.’

Kia was a member of NYU's Inaugural class of the IGNITE Institute for Women of Color in the Social Sector, and the final class of the Future Executive Directors Fellowship sponsored by the Nonprofit Roundtable of Greater Washington. Over the years, she's gained a deeper insight into what makes an effective organization by working with firms focused on capacity building and helping nonprofits to reach their goals.

Today, through Heart for the Community Consulting, LLC, Kia acts as a trusted Advisor to mission-driven organizations; sharing the insights she's gained by serving as a nonprofit resource development specialist, freelance grant writer, researcher and board development consultant.

"⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I had a fantastic experience working with Heart for the Community Consulting! Their team is professional, knowledgeable, and truly passionate about making a difference. Kia Chatmon was especially attentive and adaptable to the needs of our work. She was proactive and thought outside the box to help our nonprofit find local funding to sustain our efforts. I highly recommend their services! Although we no longer use their services, products Kia provided are still staples we use in tracking grant opportunities. You will be in good hands!"

"Working with Kia Chatmon was my first experience with a grant writer. My organization had so much language about our programming and outcomes. Kia analyzed all of our collateral and worked with me to create a cohesive story about our approach and impact and I was able to use the language to answer a variety of grant application questions. Her collaborative approach also gave me ideas on how to approach some of our initiatives and how to involve more stakeholders in our community. "

- LeeAndra Khan, Executive Director of Epic Academy

Kia updated and reorganized our grant process. She worked closely with the team, managed our expectations, and developed a multi-year plan to help us actualize grants. She regularly met with and kept our busy staff on target. I was especially pleased with how she introduced new opportunities, helped us enact a short-term and long-term plan for success, and educated the team and some board members about the evolving world of grants and trends. Kia and her team are patient, kind, and results-driven. I strongly recommend Kia and Heart for the Community Consulting. As a leader she certainly has the nonprofit community at heart.
